Preschool programs began in the United States during the first quarter of the twentieth century with the first public preschool opening in 1925 in Chicago at Franklin School. After the 1970s the popularity of preschools increased as women were entering the workforce and people believed that children needed initial skills before they attended elementary school. Early childhood education plays a key role in a child’s academic development because he or she learns soft skills, job skills, and develop positive traits. Preschool is not like kindergarten, but instead a stepping-stone that prepares young students for the years of schooling they will have later in life. As more schools began to open families†¦show more content†¦Preschool not only prepare children for kindergarten but also for future careers and to support their children’s initial training through preschool education. â€Å"According to economist James Heckman, it’s known as one the most effective job training programs out there.† (â€Å"The Best Job-Training Program†2). Many studies have been done and results have shown that preschool children are sick less often, have a rare chance of being unemployed, and were less likely to be in jail. For example, â€Å"The Perry Preschool project a study done in the early 1960’s in Michigan which demonstrated differences in children who attended preschool and those who didn’t. â€Å" (â€Å"The Best Job-Training Program†2). They separated two and four year old children into two groups, in which one group did not attend preschool and the second group went to preschool for two hours a day, five days a week. 27 years later they did a follow-up study with the participants. Results indicated that girls who attended preschool were 50% more likely to have a savings account and 20% more likely to own a car. Boys who att ended preschool were half as likely to be arrested and earned 50% more in salary. Those who didn’t attend preschool had higher risks of not acquiring the same opportunities available to them as those who went to preschool.
